DESCRIPTION
A very rare short-season heirloom variety. This carrot can grow over 8 inches long in fertile loose soil with a stout snub nose. Has a dark orange color with rich sweet old-time carrot flavor. Early Scarlet Horn was one of the varieties grown by the Metis native community who lived in the Red River Valley in the 1800's. The Red River Settlement was a colony built at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers long before Confederation. It would become the city of Winnipeg. This seed was gifted by a Métis seed saver, Caroline Chartrand from Winnipeg.
Growing Tips:
- Carrots need well-drained, well-cultivated soil. Add a couple inches of compost or well-rotted manure, and a light application of general-purpose fertilizer before planting. Work it into the top 8 to 10 inches of soil.
- Although carrots tolerate a little shade, they'll be at their sweet, crunchy best in full sunlight.
- Harvest late in the season to allow the carrots to 'sweeten up'. When days are warm and nights cool, carrots make sugar during the day, but don't expend that sugar energy at night. In other words, the carrot grows sweeter over time!
- Days to maturity: 70
